My Journey

My journey of meeting and connecting with remarkable individuals from all walks of life and both sides of the aisle began at a young age. Later in life, my mother recounted her memory of the Voting Rights Act and the historic march in Montgomery, Alabama. She witnessed civil rights leaders including John Lewis marching for the rights of all. In 1965, activists organized the historic march for voting rights from Selma to Montgomery on March 25th. It must have been a profound experience for her to witness such a pivotal moment in history. Years later, after my college years, my path led me to Atlanta, Georgia, where I had the privilege of connecting with Congressman John Lewis of the fifth district. Interestingly, I was unaware of this connection until our initial meeting many years ago. Over time, we developed a friendship, and Congressman Lewis also became my representative in Congress. Together, we organized various community events, including meet-and-greets, the Inman Park Parade, fundraisers, and the launch of the Atlanta Multicultural Festival—a non-partisan event aimed at bringing people from diverse backgrounds together. One of the highlights of our collaboration was co-chairing the last festival event in 2014. Additionally, I had the honor of hosting an event in my home where Congressman John Lewis shared his life story with my neighbors from both sides of the political aisle. Did you know the Congressman was an Ordained Minister who shared many of his stories on his journey that afternoon. It was a memorable occasion, cherished by Democrats, Republicans, and Independents alike—an afternoon that will always remain in our hearts. He and some of the staff attended church with me and spoke and preached a sermon. Wow! I still vividly remember the first day I met Congressman John Lewis not long after he was elected to Congress. It was at the former City Athletic Club in the CNN Center, which is now the Turner Athletic Club in Atlanta, GA where I played racquetball. He loved ties, and so did I; I complimented his tie, and the rest is history. Congressman John Lewis was one of many wonderful souls I met on my journey, and I look forward to sharing more about those who have influenced my path. As we reflect on the legacy of Congressman John Lewis, we celebrate his unwavering spirit and commitment to justice. Thank you! February 21, 1940 - July 17, 2020, Your spirit shines forever!

A Grateful Survivor

On April 19, 1999, while on our way to dinner, my life changed in an instant. A drunk driver crossed into our lane and hit us head-on. It all happened so quickly, but I vividly remember shielding my face. I sustained severe head and eye injuries, among others, and for the first several hours, I thought I was paralyzed. The trauma and shock were overwhelming.

Miraculously, despite the initial fear, I survived. Though the journey of recovery was long and filled with medical procedures and rehabilitation, I know without a doubt that God protected me that evening and throughout the years that followed.

I am forever grateful to my remarkable surgeon, the first responders, and the Atlanta Police who arrived at the scene on Ponce de Leon Avenue. Although I only remember fragments of that night, I know that I was surrounded by compassionate individuals who ensured I was cared for.

Now, 25 years later, my passenger and I continue to reflect on that evening with immense gratitude. We are deeply thankful to everyone who played a role in our survival and recovery. This experience, as challenging as it was, is part of my life’s journey, and I carry it with gratitude and faith every day.
